Chapter Two — In the Bathroom

Amelia felt scared×怖がった. She did not know this family. She was not Hana. She needed time to think. “I’ll go to the bathroom to think,” she said to herself. She went in and closed the door.

The bathroom was small and tidy×きちんとした、片付いた. The walls had white tiles×タイル. It was very different from her messy×散らかった bathroom at home. She looked in the mirror. She saw her new face — Hana’s face. It was crazy! But it was real.

“Hana-chan!” her mom called. “Hurry! Don’t be late for school!”

School? That was not important now! But she had to pretend×ふりをする that it was.

Amelia’s arm hurt. She rolled up her sleeve×袖をまくった. There was a long, pink scar×傷跡. It was a new scar, not an old one. This was another mystery×謎 about her new body.

“Hana-chan! Come downstairs right now!” Mom called again.

Amelia shouted back. “Okay, Mom, I’m coming!” She had to pretend to be Hana. She had to smile, and she had to go to school to find more clues×手がかり. But she would not forget the scar. “I have to find my way home,” she said to herself in the mirror.
